Chief Corentin, AKA The guy who managed to ‘tame’ Mudakiel
Now for information about him since I didn’t go into extensive detail about the Humans or anything in the TDC Universe. To put it simple Humans in the world of TDC (In the Middle Plain and ‘earth’ so to speak) live a very nomadic life akin to the humans of Elf Quest; they make their living off the lands, live in ‘tree houses’, etc. things like that. It should be noted that animals in the TDC’s ‘earth’ have similarities to what we know as ‘reality’ they have deer, etc. but they also have other creatures that are designed just for the world (Such as Artiossnae which can be found on the Middle Plain as well as in Hell).
Corentin is the chief of a large clan of humans that live in the middle of the dominant continent of the Middle Plain. How he and Mudakiel met is a mystery to everyone but himself and the Noxia but many have come to respect their chief and the creature that he calls a friend and Ally because Mudakiel protects their clan from predators and other rival clans. Mudakiel is not so much ‘tamed’ as he is just allowing Corentin the time to be with him, Mudakiel was ‘lonely’ and thus this companionship is something that he enjoys which is why he allows for Corentin (And others) to ride him and use him for things such as hunting, etc.
Each Clan of humans has specific Tribal Markings for each, thus no two tribal patterns will be the same. In Corentin’s clan the markings are generally painted on the face and also around key scars that came from hunts or fights. In Corentin’s case the large scar on his arm was the one that he received from Mudakiel during the beginnings of their companionship and thus it holds a key sentimental value to the human. Outfits are generally made out of tanned hides and fur from the creatures they hunt.

matterintothevoid asked: I like asking stuff sometimes, and it's always cool to learn about awesome artists so have an ask! :D who/what are your main inspirations for art and your head world?

For the most part my main inspirations for my Headworld and the like come from my fascination for the more ‘unnatural’ things. In TDC, the name itself is The Devil’s Creed which is something I came up with in 1998 and have been building on since that creation. My inspiration comes from a number of things, as you’ve likely read up about is TDC revolves around Heaven, Hell and the Middle Plain (Which isn’t as fully discussed at this point) and a lot of the inspiration comes from my own way of seeing these worlds and what I want it to be like. I draw inspiration from other things, such as Dante’s Inferno and for the humans of TDC the Elfquest Comics but most of it is just spur of the moment from the head kinda things. Spur of the moment being usually from watching Animal Planet and seeing it on TV and going “Oh my god this is PERFECT for what I am looking for!”  and well if we want to talk Noxia, a LOT of my inspiration for them just comes from looking at real life horse pictures because many of their colorations are based off of horses and horse patterns such as Grullo, Bay, Zorse, etc.

The major inspiration though would certainly come from my family as they influence me to keep doing what I love and well that’s of course what I do.

Mudakiel Colors
And for those wondering what I meant by Mudakiel being ‘special’. In all of the Noxia known, Mudakiel is the only one to have in essence been ‘tamed’ to an extent, he is still a ravenous beast like any other Noxia but he is domesticated enough to where he knows how to control the beastial urges that his species comes with.
Mudakiel lives on the Mortal Plane where he stays with his human Corentin. Because Mudakiel lives on the Mortal plane he has developed certain features that allow him to be better adapted to the bright light and heat of the areas in which he travels. Mudakiel’s body markings (As seen in his color reference) are what he has brought onto himself to help regulate the heat of his body. The large white blotches help to deflect light and help to keep his body from boiling since they are in essence giant tar pits with legs. If a Noxia were to ‘boil’ it would cause a lot of internal gas that could make them implode.
Mudakiel’s darker colors help to absorb heat when he needs it, think of it like the big sails of certain things like the Dimetrodon, Stegosaurus, etc. from the prehistoric age. The biggest development for Mudakiel is, while his eyes still follow the same pattern as normal Noxia (Normal Irish, Dark Pupil, Light Sclera) his eyes have developed to take and withstand the bright light that comes with living outside the caverns. It took him years to get used to but his eyes are adapted to the bright light and he has larger pupils that are much thicker than a normal Noxia’s. Mudakiel’s eyes are very noticeable even at a distance.
Corentin will often ride Mudakiel and thus he is often seen with a saddle on his back, the saddle loops around his shoulders and under his armpits where it connects into the middle of his under chest and into the second straps there, the strap continues to the third set of straps and it firmly stays in place by another set of straps that wrap around his neck. The saddle is meant to be comfortable for Corentin to ride as Mudakiel’s movements are very bumpy when walking.
Overall Mudakiel is very docile and if you were to ever actually run into him you could facecling to him and he would allow it. Typically Mudakiel keeps himself at a ‘standard’ size that’s just slightly taller than a human but not as intimidating as a full sized Noxia would be. Think of him as a tall (very tall) horse) where your head would just come up to the top of his shoulder.

More information about this particular Noxia will come later once I actually get everything drawn out for him. Mudakiel is far different from any and most Noxia you have seen so far and this will be explained with a detailed image of him that I am hopefully going to get done sometime this week.
Any questions however are welcome ^^

"Yay, eyes!
Does that mean Noxia have no actual bones? If so, how do they hold their shape? I mean, even snakes and lizards have bones.
What would cause a Noxia to cry? Emotions, dust and stuff irritating the eye, or a combination like us?
Also, could you clarify this for me? You said that from far off the eyes look like the one solid color of the iris, yet in low light (what they normally are exposed to) the pupil covers most of the visible eye, and therefore it seems to me that the solid color you saw from far off would be that of the pupil, not the iris.
Thank you, this was very informative.

The Noxia have no actual bones to hold or support their bodies, if you want to compare them to something in the real life world you could very well compare them to Insects such as Roaches, Beetles, etc. where their ‘bone structure’ is on the outside of the body. However the true thing that you can compare a Noxia with is much like a worm or any form of Parasitic Worm that can be found in animals. They hold up in structure by hardening their bodies outer ‘shell’ and forming a type of ‘exoskeleton’ that is both pliable and soft to the touch.

What could or would cause a Noxia to cry is very interesting to say the least. They do not have emotions, or at the very least a deep sense of feeling emotions such as Love, etc. So feeling Sorrow, Pain, etc. doesn’t register and won’t cause them to tear up. Dust and particles in the eyes can and will cause irritation and that will certainly earn tears but they usually don’t last long as the Noxia shed a lot of tears if something foreign were to get in or around their eyes. It could be a combination of things like us but that is very rare in general.

Clarification time, yes at a distance the eyes look like a solid color of the Iris. This is a trick of the eyes, at a distance the colors are hard to make out so they generally look like the easiest thing for you to distinguish from one or the other, brighter colors are more noticeable than the darker color of the pupil or the extremely light colors of the Sclera. I suppose I should say it depends on the darkness of the Pupil (If we are talking Red eyes here then Red is EXTREMELY hard to see) If it’s not too dark then you could possibly see the actual pupil instead of the Iris, but if it’s something darker (In the case of Aliah’s) it could be harder to see the darker color and your eyes could focus on what little there is of the Iris and play the trick of the mind into thinking that this it the actual color of said eye.

Think of it like a Mind Game, your eyes see one thing at a distance but when you are face to face with it you see something else. What looks like a log in the water could actually be a crocodile/alligator sorta thing.

"Horn structure, and what they’re for. Battling, I assume, but with the different colors, do they act like the bright plumage on a male bird?

I will certainly go into more detail on this in a future drawing! Currently I am actually doing another Work In Progress for another Noxia who’s extremely special in the sense of what he is and what he can do.

As far as horns go they are in general used for battling, fighting, etc. depending on the shape and style of the horns themselves. Headbutting, etc. occur with the horns but there is no true reason for having them other than just decoration and for show. They don’t really act like the bright plumage of a bird because the Noxia have no true desire to take a ‘mate’ for an extended period of time or to even court and woo. With the Noxia it’s basically “I find you, lets make babies, okay we’re done screw off.” XD

I’ve been meaning to do this for awhile but here we go. Noxia Eyes and Details about their eyes in General. I will type things and go into more detail on each item here since my writing is fucking HORRID!
—————————————————-
Space of the Entire Eye
As I answered on a question about their eyes, what you see of the Noxia’s eyes is roughly 10-20% of the actual eye. Their eyes are HUGE because of the fact that there is no true bone to hold them into one area of the space. So, because of this the eyes are anchored into place by several long strings and vessels of Tar that keep them suspended in the head. The eyes are then protected by a large layer of liquid goop that is of a thicker consistency than the rest of their body, it keeps the eyes settled in place and keeps them from moving much. This goop is also what a Noxia ‘cries’ should it shed tears, Noxia in essence cry Black since that is the bodies natural color.
Regular Light
In Regular light the Noxia’s eyes are fairly akin to Cat Like Eyes, they have a slitted pupil and the Iris takes up the common amount of space that it normally would on any living creature. With the Noxia their eyes are three shades of the basic color. The Example given for that particular eye reference is Busiris’s own Eye which contains three shades of Bright Sky Blue. This is the same for ALL Noxia, it should also be noted that the Eye Colors for the Noxia also match their claw and horns as well.
Low Light
Because the Noxia live in such dark caverns this is the normal way their eyes would be reflected if you actually got an up close and personal view of the eye. The pupil expands to take up 90% of the space of the Iris leaving little of the Iris to be seen, their eyes are meant to see in the dark and by expanding their pupils they get greater vision in the Dark. The Example for these particular colors is Aliah.
In extremely low light the Pupil will expand to take up almost the entire Iris to ensure that they can see as much as possible.
Bright Light
Bright Light is a horrid thing to the Noxia and in this particular picture the eyes are being squinted shut to try and lessen the blow of the Light Source that is hitting them. Noxia’s Pupils will shrink down to about 10% of their normal size when they are in Natural Light (IE: Outside around Lava, Sunlight, etc.) and they are half-blind like this because the light absolutely hurts their eyes in general. The example for these particular colors is Canicus.
Sudden flashes of BRIGHT LIGHT will cause their pupils to shrink drastically depending on how severe the flash of light is, if the flash of light is extremely bright it might cause the pupil to almost completely disappear. Bright flashes of light not only cause confusion for the Noxia but it also causes pain as well as has them stunned and disoriented for several moments while their eyes readjust to the sudden changes in light or if it’s in a dark cavern while their eyes return to their natural state.
Examples used for the first of the Bright Light Images Zecklin
Third Eyelid
Noxia’s eyes have a total of Three Eyelids, the third of which is very much like a cats eyes. You rarely if ever see this eyelid unless the Noxia is sick or unless they pull it up to protect the eye from harm such as in battles with one another or if something is trying to jab at their eyes. The third eyelid is extremely thick and acts as a protective agent for many things and it is often the same color as the Pupil, a darker color than that of the rest of the eye. Zecklin is also the example for this particular reference.
At a Distance
When you are at a distance the Noxia’s eye colors almost always blend in, you cannot distinguish what the pupil, iris or sclera is until you actually get closer. The eyes look like one solid color which is usually the main color of the eye (IE: The Irises Color)

"Cool, I look forward to seeing them!
Is there any way to escape a Noxia or more than one if it wants to eat you? Do they have any weaknesses you could exploit to protect yourself? (they live in the dark, so they’re sensitive to bright light, ect.)
- Gryphon98 on DA
"

-

For the most part when a Noxia desires to consume something the chance of escape is extremely little to nearly impossible. Given the fact that they can be quite large, the bigger of the Noxia are hard to just get away from while you can take your chances with smaller Noxia that are likely new and still new to hunting and survival. If more than ONE wants to eat you, your best bet is hoping that they aggressive nature between them will cause them to fight over the particular food source leading to a opening where you can run and get to safety. Since anything that isn’t them being found within their territory is seen as precious this is something that will more than likely happen as they will fight over the best food so to say. When it comes down to it, your best bet on escaping a single one is to hope you avoid the teeth and get a chance to hit them in the upper part of the back of the throat, which is extremely sensitive and will cause them to basically up chuck whatever they just ate.

Weaknesses for the Noxia would have to include the fact that their bodies are EXTREMELY pliable, you can tear them apart easily and it does take awhile for them to reform if they are completely mutilated to the extent where parts of the body are flung here and their. Because they live in the darkness a sudden powerful flash of light will not only cause them confusion but it WILL stun them for several seconds, they will also be dazed for a short time after because a sudden bright light causes their eyes to distort and they basically see stars.

"Oh, cool! I might have use for this name generator.
Woah. Do you have any close-up drawings of a Noxia’s eye?
Haha, tar pools. If you went swimming in one would it eat you?
Yeah, I kinda feel that way about my original stuff at the moment too. And I will probably always have questions.

I will be working on Close-Up’s of their eyes when I get the chance. I’ve been in quite the drawing mood lately so maybe some more will pop up on my sketchpad. For the most part I lack true close ups but I will get to them sometime within this week or the weekend  Because it is something that I want to work with for them.

For the most part if you go into the Noxia territory you are more than likely going to be chowder for them XD They Noxia are a species that live to eat and unless you find one that is more laid back (Such as Canicus or Aliah) then you are well pretty much going into that mouth XD The main reason that they do desire to consume anything they can get a hold of is because they need the nutrients from something to help with the production of the species. They get more nutrition from other species than themselves but even by eating themselves the supply enough nutrients to produce an offspring should they desire.

"Are all their eyes the same color or does it differ from one to the other? Also, what shape are the pupils, (circular like us, slits like a cat, sideways like a goats, ect.) or do they not have them?

The Noxia eye colors vary from Noxia to Noxia and in many cases their eyes can be any color of the Rainbow if you wanted them to be. Anything imaginable can be their eye color though duller/darker colors like white, black, etc. are extremely rare and generally mean that there is a defect with the eyes such as blindness, etc. Because their colors can range to whatever you imagine it’s also giving way to many possibilities for their eyes you can have bright color eyes to a very dark body or even neon colored eyes and it wouldn’t matter.

The thing to note about the Noxia is that their eyes match the colors of their Claws and Horns, such as how Aliah’s are red and his horns/claws are also red. Or Busiris who has bright crystal blue eyes with the same colored horns. Why they match is not known yet but there is likely a reason behind it, I just have to find the time to sit down and get more information about them in general for the knowledge of this to become known.

The shape of the Noxia’s pupiles is slitted like a cats however they are rarely seen unless you are up close and personal to the head of the Noxia and in many cases that means you are in the mouth of said Noxia. The reason it is so hard to see the pupils themselves however is due to the fact that they are just different shades of the main eye color. I will be doing a few pictures to detail this later when I have the time but the Noxia have a unique layout with their eyes.

A noxia’s eyes are huge, massive even sitting inside their heads, because there is no ‘bone’ to hold them in place they are attached to the muscles or ‘tar’ of the body and thus suspended in a pool of liquid goo. What you see on the outside of the body is only 10% of the actual eye, and the rest is seated inside the head. The noxia have a total of three eyelids, much like a cats eyes the main two are seen while the third is never seen unless they are either waking or ill. The third eye lid is a means of protecting their eyes and it also can fold over the eye when they are swimming to allow them to see under water or lava.

Onto the major details of the eyes, at a distance the Noxia’s eyes will look like one solid color until closer inspection in which you will see three colors on the eyes themselves. Using Aliah as an example his eyes are a deep maroon in color and this looks normal but when you get up close you will see a darker maroon color for the slitted pupil and then a brighter red for the Sclera (or ‘white’ of the eyes) the Iris is the dominant color that these two other colors fall off of. The Pupil will always be a darker color than the Iris while the Sclera will always be a lighter/bright color than the Iris.

In rare cases this is reversed to have a Pupil that is lighter/bright than the Iris and the Sclera being darker but this generally means defects with the eyes as well and could mean possible blindness in the Noxia that have such traits. Noxia can also have Heterochromia Iridum (Two colored eyes) but it’s also extremely rare.
